Not going to lie, I didn’t have much planned for my four-day weekend getaway to Vienna in mid-February. I had a week before I started my 6-week internship in London and I thought, why not visit my cousin and his wife before then? So I booked my flights with less than a month to spare, and before I knew it I was on my way to the Austrian capital.
As a classical music hub, Vienna was pretty high up on my European bucket list. Since I was five years old, I studied classical piano, which eventually included Vienna-based composers like Ludwig von Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Hayden, Johannes Brahms, Franz Schubert and (of course) Johann Strauss, to name a few. Although I saw an amateur orchestra play while I was there, it would be nice to visit again and see a professional performance at the opera house.
With classical music still playing a large role in Vienna’s culture scene, it’s part of the reason why Viennese balls continue to be so popular today. I wasn’t there during ball season, but from what I can gather, it seems like an occasion straight out of a Renaissance movie.
But the romance of the 1800s are not confined to elite occasions. Walking around the city, it’s easy to see what inspired these musicians and the people of Vienna all these years.
So instead of me explaining why I loved Vienna so much, I’ll let her do the talking for me.
