5 Travel-Friendly Workouts You Can Easily Do In A Hotel Room

Travel and fitness don’t have to be mutually exclusive things. This year I’m trying my best to incorporate more fitness into my travel life, and I thought I’d share some of my favourite YouTubers whose workouts I can do literally anywhere - including from my hotel (or AirBnB) room! Here are my 5 favourite equipment-free, travel-friendly workouts! Travel and fitness aren’t mutually exclusive. In fact, it’s easier than ever now to keep on top of your fitness routine whilst traveling!

Although you may be walking or biking as you explore a new city, there are so many benefits for getting your heart rate pumping and squeezing in a travel-friendly workout on your holiday or work trip! As we learned from Elle Woods, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands, they just don’t!”

Travel-friendly workouts are great for endurance, enhancing your mood, boosting energy, relieving travel-related stress and alleviating muscle tightness from those cramped seats on planes, trains and busses. And best of all, you can power through a work out in 20 minutes or less! Spoiler: I even have a killer 5-minute routine for anyone short on time.

So grab a yoga mat or a hotel towel and get ready to sweat with these 5 travel-friendly workouts!

5 Travel-Friendly Workouts You Can Easily Do In A Hotel Room

Emi Wong

Emi Wong’s fitness routines are travel-approved– they have to be! It’s why she started a YouTube channel in the first place! Emi started her channel in April 2017, and has since become one of Hong Kong’s fastest growing creators. And it’s no wonder why! Her travel-friendly workout routines are designed to keep your workout short, fat-burning, equipment-free and using as little space as possible. (Because let’s be real– hotel rooms aren’t always the most spacious!)

Some of Emi’s videos are dedicated to HIIT or muscle-specific workouts, but she also has travel vlogs where she shows different ways to incorporate fitness into your everyday travel life. For instance, at the beach she takes full advantage of the sand’s natural resistance and does some jumping jacks. Simple and easy to incorporate into your hectic travel lifestyle!

What I love most about Emi’s channel is that it’s bridging these two seemingly competing worlds together! Who knew fitness could be this glamourous!

Sarah’s Day

Just to put it out there: I’m low-key obsessed with Sarah’s day. Her YouTube videos exude positivity and healthy eating & exercise. Her Instagram Stories have me in stitches. And her honesty across all her social media platforms is incredibly refreshing. So when she released her eBook, I was ready to buy it the second it went on sale on Black Friday!

Sarah Stevenson’s eBook is very easy to follow. There are four routines per week. The toughest days are Sweaty Shredder, which are aptly named, Toning Power and her Challenge days. The remaining ‘Activity’ day is easy to include if you have an active lifestyle and are looking for ways to mix it up outside your hotel room in a new city! The ‘Challenge’ day is great days were you go back to the hotel and have some extra energy to burn.

As a bonus, she has even developed her own timer app so you can follow her Sweaty Shredders and Toning Powers without resetting a timer every time you take a 10-second break! It’s also body-weight only, making it the perfect travel-friendly workout!

Needless to say, within the first five minutes, I was huffing and puffing and ready to fall down! Her fitness guide is definitely geared toward people who’s fitness would fall in the intermediate-to-advanced category. For beginners, like myself, I found it much easier to half the workouts suggested. So for Sweaty Shredder, I only did three sets, as opposed to six. For Toning Power, I did two sets instead of four. It’s still a killer workout, but you need to still be able to walk around the city you’re exploring the next day!

The eBook goes for $70 AUD, and it’s definitely worth the investment if you’re dedicated to getting back on top of your fitness. But if that’s a bit out of your price range, Sarah also publishes some easy at-home work out videos to follow along on her YouTube channel.

Koboko Fitness

Another favourite fitness YouTuber of mine is Kola Olaosebikan of Koboko Fitness. After giving birth to her son, Kola went on a journey to loose the weight she gained during pregnancy in a sustainable way. While many fitness routines will give you a strict food plan to go along with the exercise routine, Kola goes against the grain and allows you to eat everything in moderation! This healthy approach to food is not only sustainable, it makes it guilt-free to try new foods while you’re traveling!

I also really appreciate that she has so many videos that are 5- or 10-minutes long! This makes it easy to power through a quick travel-friendly workout session first thing in the morning or whenever you have a few minutes to spare during the day! Kola also has a few 30-minute HIIT videos for days where you have a bit more time to yourself.

She even has a period workout, which is amazing for anyone who suffers from menstrual cramps! 15 minutes of endorphins later, and your body is ready to head out and explore a new city! (And if endorphins aren’t enough, there’s always ibuprofen and the knowledge that you just did a workout on your period, you go-getter, you!)

Chloe Ting

If you like your travel vlogs along with a side of fitness, Chloe Ting has plenty of travel-friendly workouts for you! Many of her exercise routines have a full-body emphasis, meaning you’ve worked out all your core muscles and can go exploring a lot quicker! She also has a few videos dedicated to tabata workouts.

Tabata is a type of HIIT fitness, where you go hard for 20 seconds, rest 10 seconds, and repeat eight times for a total of four minutes. It’s been proven to be one of the quickest ways to improve your overall fitness level. Plus, four minutes is so easy to squeeze into even the busiest traveller’s schedule!

Although some of Chloe’s workouts do use some weights and other gym equipment, it’s easy to substitute some of the equipment with basic body-weight exercises like push-ups, chair dips, sit-ups and wall sits. Or, if the hotel you’re in has a gym, you have an excuse to try it before you head to your next destination!

Yoga With Adriene

With lots of travel comes lots of sore muscles and a need to stretch! Luckily, Yoga With Adriene is the perfect travel-friendly workout! If you’re looking for basic yoga ‘classes’ to follow during your travels, Adriene has you covered with her annual 30-day yoga journeys, which she puts together every January. If you’re experiencing tightness from flying, carrying heavy bags, or walking/biking around the city, Adriene has muscle-specific yoga practices to help you relax that tension. And there’s also a large emphasis on relaxation and being present, which is great for calming the mind after a stressful travel day.

The best part is that you don’t need to have any knowledge of yoga to follow along with her videos! Adriene demonstrates each move and will give you verbal cues to check your alignment. She also gives variations of more difficult poses, which makes it easy to adapt based on your flexibility.

As for a yoga mat, feel free to pack your own! But if you don’t have one, or if your bag’s too full, there’s always the option to lay a towel on the ground to use for your practice.
