Life update! I’m Moving To The Other Side Of The World
It’s official! I am off on another adventure! This time it’s taking me to the opposite side of the world! In case you missed the teasers over on my Instagram or the big announcement on my Facebook page, I thought I’d write an actual post telling you all about my decision:
Life Update! I’m moving to Australia.
Ever since I was 9 or 10 years old, I’d always tell my parents that I was moving to Europe as soon as I turned 18. Granted, I was 19 when I left home and 22 when I lived (briefly) in London. But needless to say, I was always eager to get out and explore the world.
Flash forward a few years, and I was accepted into Canada’s top journalism school, Ryerson University in Toronto. Not quite the European escapades I had hoped for, but I would be pursing my “full-time” studies and a “tourist” in a city I had never visited before. And thus began The Full-Time Tourist: A full-time student exploring her new home.
During that time, I met my current boyfriend who had moved to Toronto from Sydney, Australia. As someone who had only heard about Australia through two cousins who had visited and Crocodile Dundee, I had already decided I would visit the country eventually. So after graduating from my degree with very few job prospects in Toronto, Sydney seemed like an increasingly amazing idea!
Our Toronto lease was up October 1st. And I couldn’t see myself staying in Toronto for another year before we officially moved. So when my boyfriend’s friend posted on Facebook about a job opportunity and it seemed very likely he would get the job, I applied for a working-holiday visa two days later. Within an hour and a half, my visa was approved. And the next day, we had a place.
In the span of four days, the universe was clearly thought moving to Australia was a good idea.
Do you have a job lined up?
My boyfriend received confirmation a few weeks ago that he has the job he applied for back in Toronto. I am still on the job hunt, so any leads on writing, content creative, digital PR or digital marketing would be immensely helpful! Although I’m sure I’ll be able to find something at some point in Australia, it would be nice to work in my field.
Send me an email here if you guys know of any Sydney jobs in journalism or public relations!
Where are you now?
As I hadn’t been home in 10 months, we planned to spend a month in British Columbia visiting some of my relatives and in Edmonton, Alberta visiting my family. So that’s where I am now. It’s also why I haven’t been updating my blog nearly as much as I’d like to!
I mean, organizing your life into sell, donate, ship to Edmonton, and 2 suitcases for Australia is tough. And working 5 days a week plus trying to see friends before leaving leaves little room for personal endeavours. But don’t worry- I’m taking you guys on this journey across the world with me as well!
More exciting news!
I finally updated my iPhone 5S (after 4 years) to the iPhone 8 Plus after seeing the incredible video and photo content I shot with dubdub studios. I want to be much more active over onFacebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Google+, and YouTube! Yes- you read that correctly. I want to do more video content for The Full-Time Tourist!
There are a couple of videos I still have to put together for my B.C. trip after I finish releasing my Toronto content. But I am so excited to share with you my adventures moving to Australia from Canada for a year!
Don’t worry- I plan to do a blog post all about how to move to Australia from Canada. So far, I’d like to cover:
- When to buy your ticket (and what kind of ticket to buy)
- Whether you need injections
- How much money to have in your bank account
- A weekly budget breakdown living in Sydney (groceries, rent, etc. you can expect)
- What your travel insurance needs to include
